Forces and Motion
We are about to begin our new unit on forces and motion, also known as physical science. This unit will provide a variety of experiences through guided scientific investigation. As we begin all students will start with Lesson 1, of the text. Each student will proceed at his or her own pace. A required amount of work is to be completed by everyone. The weekly assignment sheets will reflect student expectations for that week. Students capable of successfully working at a faster pace will have access to materials needed to complete each successive lesson. From time to time I will pull the class together for a mini-lesson on the important topics covered by the text.
I believe that this method of learning maximizes differentiation within the classroom. It also enables me to guide students through the process of investigation, while each child learns at a comfortable rate. I have used this same style of teaching very successfully for many years in my home state of New York. The students were excited and had the opportunity to work with other children with similar skills in small groups. I will personally check with each child, on a daily basis to see what is accomplished. Look for my initials in your child’s notebook.

Science Week of 12/6
In Class:
* Using the text, the class will complete planetary charts for this week's test.
* Discuss the solar system and all to the things we can find there. Hand out
solar system review sheets.
* Following the planet review, students will complete the spaceship blueprints.
Each group will display its work and explain the reasoning behind the
drawings.
Homework: REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR PACKETS WITH YOU TOMORROW!
There will be a test on the planets on Friday. Students will be allowed to use the planetary chart 10.1c and notes on the planets taken from the film and class. (two sheets)
Tuesday 12/7
In Class:
* Finish blueprints today.
* Introduction to lesson 11, Page 146. Review objectives, page 146 and complete
"Getting Started" on page 147.
* In preparation for today's activity, discuss how to convert centimeters into
millimeters.
* Each group will begin Inquiry 11.1, page 147. Read the directions and look over
materials before beginning the experiment.
Homework: Be sure you have completed chart 10.1c and the fact sheet from last week's film on the planets. You must bring them for the test Friday!
Wednesday 12/8
In Class:
* Complete Inquiry 11.1
* Upon completion, review Inquiry 11.1 with the class.
* Students will show their models of the solar system to the class.
* If time permits, discuss scale and what it means. Show how we use the scale of
10,000 km = 1cm
Homework: Remember Friday's test on the planets. DO NOT MEMORIZE PLANET INFORMATION. YOU CAN USE YOUR WORKSHEETS ON THE TEST.
Thursday 12/9
In Class:
* Begin Inquiry 11.1. We will work on this as a class.
* Procedure #5 will be completed by each group, using student sheet 11.2
Homework: Test tomorrow using your worksheets. Study handout from the teacher, but you may not use it on the test.
Friday 12/10
In Class:
Planet test today!
