Forces and Motion
We are about to begin our new unit on forces and motion, also known as physical science. This unit will provide a variety of experiences through guided scientific investigation. As we begin all students will start with Lesson 1, of the text. Each student will proceed at his or her own pace. A required amount of work is to be completed by everyone. The weekly assignment sheets will reflect student expectations for that week. Students capable of successfully working at a faster pace will have access to materials needed to complete each successive lesson. From time to time I will pull the class together for a mini-lesson on the important topics covered by the text.
I believe that this method of learning maximizes differentiation within the classroom. It also enables me to guide students through the process of investigation, while each child learns at a comfortable rate. I have used this same style of teaching very successfully for many years in my home state of New York. The students were excited and had the opportunity to work with other children with similar skills in small groups. I will personally check with each child, on a daily basis to see what is accomplished. Look for my initials in your child’s notebook.

Science The Week of 11/29
* Have students design an informational brochure on their planet.
*Students will also prepare to present their brochure using the ELMO.
* All students will complete individual planetary charts, using the information
presented in class.
Homework: All brochures will be collected tomorrow.
Tuesday 11/30In Class: Complete presentation of brochures and planetary charts.
* Following the remaining presentations on the planets, the students will be given
a chance to complete their charts using an information video on the planets.
The video is part of the Eyewitness series.
* Collect all brochures for grading.
Homework: Read pages 137 - 145. Make a list of the ten things discovered during the Apollo Missions.
Wednesday 12/1In Class:Prep for in-house space project. This project is a group effort to be completed on class time and presented to the class. You will have the remainder of the week to complete the assignment.
* Each student will be given a project sheet.
* groups will form in from using assigned planets.
*Each group will prepare for a presentation presented the second half of the
period on Friday or the following Monday. All work will be checked daily and
initialed by the teacher.
Thursday 12/2 and Friday 12/3
All students will continue to complete their group project. Please see rubric for grading scale.
