Forces and Motion
We are about to begin our new unit on forces and motion, also known as physical science. This unit will provide a variety of experiences through guided scientific investigation. As we begin all students will start with Lesson 1, of the text. Each student will proceed at his or her own pace. A required amount of work is to be completed by everyone. The weekly assignment sheets will reflect student expectations for that week. Students capable of successfully working at a faster pace will have access to materials needed to complete each successive lesson. From time to time I will pull the class together for a mini-lesson on the important topics covered by the text.
I believe that this method of learning maximizes differentiation within the classroom. It also enables me to guide students through the process of investigation, while each child learns at a comfortable rate. I have used this same style of teaching very successfully for many years in my home state of New York. The students were excited and had the opportunity to work with other children with similar skills in small groups. I will personally check with each child, on a daily basis to see what is accomplished. Look for my initials in your child’s notebook.

Science Plans For The Week of 10/18
In Class:
Students will complete our study of the Moon's Phases.
1. Each student will complete a poster of lunar phases, using Inquiry page 5.2 from the white packet and the text, pages 68-69.
2. After completing the poster read pages 70 - 73, "The Apollo 11 Mission". Answer the questions a the end of the reading selection.
3. Hand out Lesson 5 review sheets. If time permits, distribute and work on the Moon phase review sheets.
Homework; Complete the two Moon phase sheets for tomorrow.
Tuesday 10/19
In Class:
Complete Moon Phases and begin Lesson 6 - Solar And Lunar Eclipses.
1. While students read pages 74 - 75 and answer questions on page 65, check Moon Phase sheets.
2. Review the answers to "Getting Started", on page 75.
3. Have students pre-read Inquiry 6.1,pages 76 - 77, "Investigating Lunar and Solar Eclipses".
4. If time permits the students may begin the Inquiry 6.1.
Wednesday 10/20
In Class:
Complete Inquiry 6.1 and review it in class..
1. Complete Inquiry 6.1. Students will look at the Inquiry at home and make sure all questions are answered.
2. Review the Inquiry, allowing student to make corrections before collection tomorrow.
3. Read about Eclipses pages 81-84.
Homework: Be sure today's lab is in order.
*(not required) For an extra grade, read pages 85-87 and make a pinhole projector for next Monday. SAFETY TIP - DO NOT LOOK DIRECTLY AT THE SUN WHILE USING THE PINHOLE PROJECTOR
Thursday 10/21
In Class:
1/2 Day of school - conferences!
Inquiry 6.2 Analyzing The Geometry Of Eclipses
1. Read through Inquiry 6.2 with the class. (pages 78-80)
2. Have the students prepare a planning sheet for Inquiry 6.2.
3. If time permits, have the students view a video in eclipses.
Homework: Be sure your planning sheet is completed for Monday.
Friday 10/22
In Class:
1/2 day of school
Repeat yesterday's lesson with the afternoon classes.
